We set out to design a scienticially-backed program that would train a wide variety of qualities (endurance, speed, hypertrophy, strength, and power) in an organized fashion.
The primary focus of this phase is structural balance and aerobic endurance. The idea is to build a bulletproof foundation upon which the rest of your progress will rely. This is where badass begins.
Getting YOLKED is the name of the game in the weight-room. The energy system focus switches to anaerobic endurance. The goal is to pack on lean mass, set the foundation for strength development, and prime your system for tough-as-balls repeat efforts.
The foundation has been established. Now it’s time to get strong. Like, stupid strong. Ox strong. Energy system training moves into aerobic power where the goal is to sustain max effort for an extended period of time. “I can run flat out for a half mile before my hands start shaking.” That sorta stuff.
The weight room is now dedicated to moving massive weight lightning fast. The more you can increase your max power, the less taxing repeatable efforts become. This is where explosive athleticism is created.
Tie it all together. Combine different strength and energy system demands. Crush everything in sight. You’ll be working to improve your strength endurance, anaerobic enzymes, and lactic acid tolerance. It’s time to win at exercise.
Keeping track of your workouts is vitally important. It’s what separates the champions from the wanna-be’s, the lions from the gazelles, the micro-brews from the Coors Light. And so, Training Logs are included with EVERY PHASE.
To fully understand the details of exercise form, videos are paramount. An (A) and (B) photo might show you where to go, but it won’t teach you how to get there. That’s why many of the exercises in #BTX include instructional videos. It’s almost like we’re training together in the gym.

#BTX is about the entire strength and conditioning continuum, so there’s a lot of variety. That said, it’s all traditional gym equipment: DB’s, BB’s, KB’s, standard machines (like a leg curl and a cable column), med balls, row machine, stationary bike, etc. We do have some sledge hammer work in Phase 4, but if you don’t have access to a sledge, you can easily replace with a cable chop (not as awesome, but a solid substitution.) The same holds true for all of the exercises…simple substitutions that mimic the same movement pattern will do the trick.
We did a lot of research on residual training effects for different motor abilities. In other words, what type of training plays nicely with what other types of training. We also researched a lot on motor programming and re-programming – basically how we get good at stuff.
